Wrestling With Faith
How Can I know God's Will?
"This is what the Lord says- your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: I am the Lord your God, who teaches you what is better for you, who directs you in the way that you should glo." - Isaiah 48:17
"Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy say pasture. Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him and he will do this: He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn, your vindication like the noonday sun." -Psalm 37: 3-6
"Trust in the with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight." -Proverbs 3:5-6
As we reflect on these three passages we see come key answers to the question above. First, we need to trust in God and obey His Word. Secondly, We need to commit our lives to the Lord. Thirdly, we need to follow where God's leading rather than following my own wisdom or the wisdom of mankind. These three things are the first part of being able to know God's will. We need to spend time reading God's Word and praying to God and asking God to reveal His will to us. Lastly, we need to be still in the presence of God. Be quiet and listen so that God can speak to us. We are so used to praying and doing all the talking that we do not give God the opportunity to speak to us. It is essential that we give God the opportunity to speak.
If we are seeking God, obeying God and spending time with God then we can know God's Will. God has a general will that applies to all of us and then God has a specific will that is designed specifically for the individual.
For example, God's will is that everyone should worship and walk in obedience to God. God's will is that no one should perish but have everlasting life. This is God's general will. God calling me to be a pastor is an example of His specific will for me.
