Wrestling With Faith

Is it okay for Christians to meditate?

The answer is it depends on how you meditate.

If you meditate like they do in yoga, eastern religions, and new age religions where you empty your mind of everything.  This is bad and dangerous because you open yourself up to any thought, and spirit that may come your way.  This is not only bad but dangerous.

Psalm 119:15-16 Says, "I will meditate on your precepts and fix my eyes on your ways.. I will delight in your statues; I will not forget your word."
Isaiah 26:3 says, "You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you."

Psalm 145: 5 says, "On the glorious splendor of your majesty, and on your wondrous works, I will meditate."

These are just some of the scriptures that talk about meditation.  The Bible says that meditation should be focused on God's Word, on God's laws, and on God's splendor and His wonderful works.  This is good healthy meditation because you are not opening your mind up to whatever comes your way.  Instead you are focusing on God which will draw you closer to God, and you also get to know God's Word and Law better also.  This makes a person stronger.

Whereas when a person empties their mind to whatever comes your way you will put yourself at risk of unhealthy thoughts, and evil spirits.  Yes, the Bible is clear that evil spirits do exist.  Spiritual warfare is real. This means if God and angels exist then so does Satan and the fallen angels (Demons).  Don't fall prey to the idea of putting yourself at risk.  This is how demon oppression and possession happens.  When you empty your mind you are welcoming whatever to come in.  When you focus on God the only things that are allowed to come in is more of God and the Holy Spirit.
