Wrestling With Faith
How do I know if God is speaking to me?
Samuel 1 3:8-10, says " A third time the Lord called, Samuel! And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said , Here I am; you called me." Then Eli realized that the Lord was calling to the boy. So Eli told Samuel, Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, Speak, Lord for your servant is listening. So Samuel went and lay down in his place. The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, Samuel! Samuel! Then Samuel said, Speak for your servant is listening."
Jeremiah 33:3 says, "Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known."
John 10:27 says, "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me."
The Bible tells us that His sheep know his voice. How does a person get to know someone? By spending time with them. Perfect example is Samuel. Samuel grew up to be a great prophet of God who was responsible for anointing kings in Israel. There was a time when Samuel was young and he did not know who God was. He lived in the temple and yet did not know God. It took a more experienced person in Eli to teach him. The same is true for us. We have to learn God's voice.
We learn God's voice my reading His Word, praying, and listening for God to speak. God speaks to people in different ways. God speaks to us by revealing things through His Word. God speaks to us through our conscience. God can speak to us audibly. God also speaks to us through other people.
When it comes knowing if God is speaking we need to realize that God will never contradict His Word or other commands that God has given. God speaks to each person differently but God does speak. As you get to know God and your relationship with God then you will learn how God speaks to you and you will learn to recognize His voice just as Samuel did.
