Wrestling With Faith

What is the difference between Religion and Faith?

To answer this question I want to start with a scripture verse.  Hebrews 11:1 says, "Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see."
So, let's start with what is faith.  Hebrews 11:1 tells us that faith is the belief in things that we cannot see.  I would continue to expand this by saying that it is believing in something that we cannot prove beyond a shadow of a doubt.  Belief in spiritual things and scientific things both take faith.  There are always things that cannot be proven.

The other part of the question is what is religion? Religion is a set of beliefs and traditions by which people seek to understand the existence of god or gods. Examples of different religions would be Buddhism, Hinduism, Muslim, Judaism, Shinto, Taoism, and Christianity.  People often confuse denominations with religions.  Denominations are different groups within the Christian religion and divisions within other religions are called sects.
So, faith and religion are not the same thing but they are related in that a person has faith within their religion.  We often talk about what faith a person is and what is being asked is what set of beliefs or traditions do you follow.

My hope is that this will help answer the question.  If you have any other questions feel free to send them to me and I will put it on our list of questions to answer.
