What does it really mean to make plans? We all do it. We map out our days, our weeks, our years, convinced we have a reasonable grip on what comes next. But James 4:13-17 cuts right through that confidence with a sobering question: what is your life? The answer is striking. We are described as a mist, here for a moment and then gone. That is not meant to discourage us but to reorient us. The passage calls us away from the posture of self-sufficiency, where our plans revolve entirely around our own will and certainty, and toward something far more grounded and honest. The phrase 'if the Lord wills' is not just a polite spiritual saying. It is a declaration of dependence, an acknowledgment that God holds the future and we simply do not. When we begin to loosen our grip on our carefully constructed schedules and invite God into the planning process from the very start, something changes in us. We stop treating disruptions as disasters and start recognizing them as potential invitations. We begin to see that the interruptions in our day might not be accidents at all. They might be exactly where God is working.
