What does it really mean to be wise? We live in a culture that constantly tells us to follow our heart, do what feels right, and put ourselves first. But James chapter 3 challenges us to take a hard look at where our wisdom is actually coming from. There are two kinds of wisdom at work in the world -- earthly wisdom and heavenly wisdom -- and they lead to very different destinations. Earthly wisdom looks intelligent on the surface. It sounds reasonable. But when we trace its fruit, we find jealousy, selfish ambition, and ultimately destruction. Heavenly wisdom, by contrast, is pure, peaceable, considerate, and full of mercy. It produces righteousness and genuine joy. The question James puts before us is not whether we are wise, but whether the wisdom guiding our decisions is truly from God. As we examine our motivations -- what drives us, what we are striving for -- we are invited to ask honestly whether we are being carried along by the current of culture or whether we are swimming against it toward something greater.
