What does the cross really mean for how we live every day? We often think of the cross as a symbol of personal salvation, a vertical connection between us and God. But Ephesians 2:11-22 opens our eyes to something far more complete. The cross was intentionally designed with two beams, and both matter. The vertical beam speaks of God drawing us near to himself, removing the spiritual alienation that separates sinful humanity from a holy God. The horizontal beam speaks of something equally powerful: the tearing down of walls between people. Paul writes to a world divided between Jews, Samaritans, and Gentiles, groups filled with suspicion, prejudice, and hostility toward one another. Sound familiar? The cross did not just offer us heaven. It called us into a new humanity, a community where those divisions lose their power. When we embrace only the vertical and ignore the horizontal, we are left holding something that is no longer a cross at all. The invitation here is to experience the full weight and beauty of what Christ accomplished, reconciliation with God and with one another.
